Continuing on the theme of New Year resolutions, lets talk about staying hydrated.

I see a lot of resolutions about exercise and food, but not as many about hydration. This doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. Drinking water and staying hydrated is so important for overall health! In the last year I’ve been pregnant and now nursing, so staying hydrated is a high priority for me in my day-to-day life. Unfortunately, drinking water isn’t always something that comes easily. Fortunately, I’ve come up with 5 tips that help me (and hopefully help you!) get and stay hydrated.

  1. Love your water bottle(s). This has been a huge one for me. Bottom line – if you love your water bottle you are more likely to grab it and take it with you places. I fell in love with my Eco Vessel insulated water bottle (pictured above) at first sight. It’s gorgeously turquoise, has a functional straw, doesn’t leak, and keeps my water the right temperature. At home I always keep a mason jar full of water too, and use Ball Sip and Straw Lids. These lids were a game changer with their huge sturdy straws. You can find the lids and straws on Amazon here
  2. Know how you drink. I drink so much more water when I have a water bottle with a straw. I think it has a lot to do with the ease factor, I don’t have to fiddle around with unscrewing a cap and replacing it when I’m done – it’s just there. Maybe straws are your thing too, or maybe you need a wide mouth bottle so you can really chug. Experiment. Test out different kinds of water bottles and you’ll find your perfect match.
  3. Love your water. This sounds silly, but hear me out. The water that you’re drinking matters. All I need is a good water filter. We use this Brita pitcher at home. My husband, Casey, is a little more picky with his water. He wasn’t drinking water at work because the tap water tastes terrible to him, even when filtered. For him, we do infused waters or tea. His favorite is green tea with lemon and I love lemon, mint, and cucumber in my water!
  4. Make water accessible. For me this means remembering to put my water bottle in the diaper bag when we go places, and remembering to grab a water bottle before I sit down for a nursing session. For Casey it means stocking his desk at work with green tea and lemons. When do you forget to drink water? If you have trouble remembering to drink anything until you get to work try a water bottle on your nightstand or by the sink where you brush your teeth.
  5. Size matters. I use a quart size mason jar at home because (among other reasons) it holds a lot of water. I’m kind of lazy, which means with a tiny water bottle I am not very likely to refill it a thousand times a day. Not really a thousand, don’t go over board with the whole hydration thing folks. Having two water bottles, my mason jar at 32 ounces and my Eco Vessel at 24 ounces, helps me keep drinking without having to worry about refilling too many times in a day.

I hope you find some motivation to stay hydrated with an awesome water bottle and delicious water! Do you have trouble staying hydrated? Are there any tips I missed?

This is good advice. I have often had trouble drinking enough water because I grew up drinking only at meals. Over the last several years though, I have seen health benefits from staying hydrated. It really does make a big difference.

I’m glad you’ve seen what a difference it can make! Changing habits, like only drinking at meals, can be hard to break.

I love this! I’m obsessed with drinking water but easily fall off the bandwagon. I’ve found that the 48 oz Nalgene bottle works best for me for size but I wish it was easier to drink from.
I love these tips and hope they help me keep on track with hydration!

This is something I need to look into! Hydration is so important, and so easily overlooked. Especially in cooler climates. I just get put off by the idea of drinking cold water when it’s already cold around me! Silly I know. 🙂

Cooler weather does make it much harder to remember to stay hydrated! That’s not silly at all, I was the same way with cold water, but now I keep my water room temperature and it seems to help me drink more.
